The Physical Activity Taskforce conducted the Active Living 101 Seminar on Wednesday 4 April 2012 at the Point Walter Recreation and Conference Centre. Over 80 people attended.
The key messages presented were about active living and the importance of activating people and places for the health and wellbeing of our community.
A new research brief from Active Living Research summarises research on community access to school sport and recreation facilities outside of school hours, as well as studies that examine the shared use of school facilities and programs with other community groups or agencies. It also describes challenges commonly associated with the shared use of recreational facilities, and opportunities for policy-makers at the state and local level.

The Toronto Charter for Physical Activity was launched in May 2010 by Global Advocacy for Physical Activity and has become a key advocacy document for government and NGO's around the world.
The World Health Organization: Global Health Risks and Action Plan for the Global Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Non Communicable Diseases is a key document written primarily for the community of international development partners, as well as those in government and civil society concerned with urgent action to address the rapidly increasing burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in low- and middle -income countries and its serious implications for poverty reduction and economic development.
This document summarises the evaluation process and findings of the TravelSmart Local Government program. The evaluation was carried out by independent review in April - July 2011. The TravelSmart Local Government program supports local government to reduce car dependency in their communities through the employment of a TravelSmart Officer.
The following document is a four page summary of the TravelSmart Workplace Program evaluation which was carried out by independent evaluation in April - July 2011. The evaluation summarises the evaluation process, findings and recommendations for enhancing the program. The TravelSmart Workplace program supports employers and site managers to reduce car trips to their workplaces and enable active, sustainable travel choices.
The Western Australian Department of Transport commissioned Marsden Jacob Associates (MJA) to undertake the "Evaluation of TravelSmart Local Government and Workplace Programs".

The Global Advocacy for Physical Activity (GAPA), the newly created Council of the International Society for Physical Activity and Health (ISPAH) has established a small initial Steering Committee to coordinate GAPA's work.
The Scottish Physical Activity and Health Alliance is a network that engages a variety of people from different sectors and professions who are involved in the promotion of physical activity and health in Scotland. It helps to inform people, connect people with others and to aid policy development and implementation.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified physical inactivity as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality. Increasing levels of physical inactivity are seen worldwide, in high-income countries as well as low- and middle-income countries.
The WHO provides recommendations for the optimal amounts of activity, but doing some physical activity is better than doing none.

ICCWA is the peak not for profit organisation involved in injury prevention and community safety promotion in Western Australia.
The Disability Services Commission is the State Government agency responsible for advancing opportunities, community participation and quality of life for people with disabilities. The Commission provides a range of direct services and support and also funds non-government agencies to provide services to people with disabilities, their families and carers.

The Heart Foundation and the Western Australian Council of State School Organisations (WACSSO) have developed a resource - a guide advocating for walking, cycling and other health issues - to assist parent groups to influence their school community to make positive changes to their environment, making it easier for children to lead healthy, more active lives.
The built environment is directly associated with physical activity, particularly walking. To encourage and facilitate walking for transport and walking for recreation, the Heart Foundation makes recommendations for adult Australians, the health sector, governments and planners that include changes to the built environment and multi-level strategies, such as public education.

Interest from the community has lead the Shire of Mukinbudin to prioritise walking as an alternative to sport, which has resulted in upgrades of infrastructure and walking maps and groups now available.
With a high number of seniors in the area, the Town of Narrogin established an active seniors group to encourage residents (including CaLD and indigenous members of the community) to participate in physical activity with the assistance of community groups.
With a very diverse multicultural community the Shire of Katanning sought to expand on existing programs to improve regular participation in physical activity. This involved targeting those community members not already engaged in physical activity and structured sport by removing barriers to participation.
The City of Fremantle identified women as a key target group to improve levels of physical activity and healthy eating. A ten week course involving participating being introduced to new physical activities options in the local community and education in the importance of nutrition and physical activity.
With many children inactive after school the Shire of Harvey introduced 'Super Skate', a safe, physically active social outing for primary school aged children which also resulted in many adults enjoying casual skating.

The Shire implemented a walking program to increase physical activity levels of residents followed by a 10,000 Step Challenge. This case study examines the project objectives, strategies, costs, results and lessons learned.

The 'Wicked Walks' resource was developed by the Town of Bassendean in 2008. It includes walk maps for three local suburbs and provides a good example of the type of walking resources Local Governments can produce to encourage the community to get more active.
The Taskforce compiled examples of walk maps developed by local governments. These maps make it easier for people to be active by cycling, walking or using public transport while doing their everyday activities.

The Bibbulmun Track Foundation is a community based not for profit organisation and aims to assist with the management, promotion and maintenance of the Bibbulmun Track.
The Bibbulmun Track is one of the world's great long distance walk trails, stretching nearly 1000kms from Kalamunda (Perth Hills) to Albany (South Coast) through the heart of the scenic South West of Western Australia.
The Heart Foundation is working to reduce the impact of heart disease on the Australian community.
