Minister’s Foreword

Minister’s Foreword

Foreword from the Hon. Terry K Waldron, Chair of the Physical Activity Taskforce.

In Western Australia, 40% of adults and over half of our children are not active enough for good health.

This level of physical inactivity has increased the burden of chronic diseases in this State, contributes to the global epidemic of overweight and obesity and increases the risk of falls in older people.

The increase in car use, rather than walking and cycling for transport, also results in more greenhouse gas emissions, pollution and congestion on our roads.

It is clear that physical inactivity is a huge cost to our State and there is an urgent need to address it.

No single agency or organisation will, however, be able to increase physical activity on its own.

That’s why the Physical Activity Taskforce (the Taskforce) was established.

The Taskforce was formed in 2001 to oversee the development and delivery of a whole of government, whole of community approach to increasing physical activity levels in Western Australia.

It brought together state government departments, local governments and non-government organisations who are underpinned by a united goal of: policy coordination; research and evaluation; and, communication and resourcing to ensure sufficient physical activity opportunities for all Western Australians.

This be active wa website supported the Taskforce’s objectives by providing an industry specific information resources portal for government and community agencies that promote and support physical activity. We hope you find it useful.

We urge all physical activity advocates to make use of the site - sharing in the vision of a physically active WA.
