Executive Summary*

The TravelSmart Local Government and Workplace programs are designed to encourage the use of public transport, cycling and walking and, ultimately, to reduce vehicle kilometres travelled by car, generating both health benefits and a reduction in a range of costs to the community including greenhouse gas emissions, air and noise pollution, and traffic congestion.

The Local Government program provides seed funding for the employment of local government TravelSmart Officers (TSOs), who work across council portfolios and with the local community to promote active transport and embed it into the organisational culture of the council, with some additional support from the Department of Transport.

The Workplace program provides assistance for organisations to create and implement workplace travel plans designed to promote sustainable transport options and influence organisational culture.

The evaluation was based on a review of existing evidence and data as well as 20+ interviews with TSOs and Travel Plan Coordinatore (TPC) in workplaces.
